ED'S FAVOURITES - 6

Four more short movies that pull everything together into perfection.
It takes a long time, talent and dedication to make shorts this good.

Jet by Jordan Chesney (2012) (USA) (8m) *

Joint winner of the 5th FILMSshort competition, Jet takes its place amongst the very best short films ever made! This dialogue-free film is a gripping thriller in which a man who plans to use a handgun on himself sees a girl being snatched from the curbside and decides he must take action. Jet was a remake of a film Jordan made less than a year before but on a lower budget and tighter shoot. A kind of dress rehearsal for this more polished version.

Jet

Cooped by Mike A Smith (2014) (USA) (9m) *

Cooped, a fantastic hand-drawn animation, was selected as the Best Short Animation in the competition. Written and directed by American Mike A Smith, Cooped is a comic short film that tells the story of a poor dog that is stuck inside all day while his master is at work. The hound can see the amazing world of squirrels and tennis balls that exists outisde his place of imprisonment, but is unable to open the door. With his master only ever coming back to sleep, it seems that our canine hero will never get out...

Musafir

Blue Hole by Erik Gardner (2012) (USA) (12m) 15 Certificate

Blue Hole was a big hit on the horror film festival circuit. With a clever, circular idea at its core, Blue Hole tells the story of an eerie lake, near a cabin in the woods, that is said to be the dwelling place of the Devil. A couple staying at the cabin read up on the legend and decide to visit the lake, only for the entity within the water to pull the woman in. Based on the unfinished writings about the lake, the man believes he can retrieve her...

Keith Reynolds Can't Make It... by Felix Massie (2008) (UK) (6m)

Keith Reynolds Can't Make It Tonight is a sly animation to have on the Best of the UK page because it is apparently set in the USA (though the spelling of 'tonight' ensures we all know that it is in fact British). It tells the story of Keith Reynolds, a man who has worked at the same company for eight years and believes he is going to be promoted today, the key to getting his co-worker, Sarah, to like him. It all, of course, goes horribly and amusingly wrong.
