SUNDANCE - ANIMATIONS 1

Sundance is considered to be one of the very top short film festivals, and is perhaps even more varied than Cannes when handing out its short awards.

Waves 98 by Ely Hagder (2015) (Lebanon) (15m)

Waves 98 won the Palm d'Or in 2015 and was in competition at Sundance in 2016. It tells the story of a depressed young man in post-war Beirut, Lebanon. He is lured into the city centre by a strange golden glow. But what will he find there? A big golden metaphor. Visually immersive, the pacing is a little slow to begin with but improves after five minutes. In a way it reminds me of the wonderful short film, Goodbye, by American Tyler Russo.

Goodbye

It's A Date by Zachery Zezima (2016) (USA) (7m)

Written and directed by Zachary Zezima and based on a true story, It's A Date is one of those animations that gains a lot of festival buzz but does not have a whole lot of story to it. A young couple are meeting on a blind date, having apparently met online, and it is as awkward as most blind dates; but it gets even more awkward when the young man starts talking about being an alien who spends most of his time trying to reconnect with his alien ancestors.

Edmond by Nina Gantz (2015) (UK) (8m)

Edmond is a stop-motion animation about a man who has suffered with a life-long affliction: cannibalism. We first meet him contemplating suicide at the edge of a lake before sliding back through time to witness individual moments when his craving for human flesh has taken over, revealing that he was a cannibal even before he was born. How is that possible? Watch this BAFTA winning short film to find out!
